Rockin’ the FFA

I was so excited the other night to see Randy Jackson Rocking the FFA patch.  That was AWESOME for the FFA organization.  It’s crazy but that is how things get started some celebrity wears something they think is cool and turn it into a fashion statement.

I don’t want to brag, but hey Randy I did it first!  I blinged out my old FFA jacket and rock it all the time.  Best part is that it still zips, twenty years later!  I was a HUGE FFA girl in high school and I still think it’s one of the best organizations out there but I guess I might be a little biased.  I have shown since I was six years old.  Over the years I have raised 11 steers, 32 hogs, 1 sheep and 1 veal calf.  I have been in several judging & speaking contests along with holding offices up to regional office and being slated for state office.  Thanks to the FFA I am where I am today because of the huge accomplishments I made in my youth.  My dad always told me the friends I would make or the contacts would be with me for the rest of my life and again Earl was right.

It makes me happy and sad at the same time to see all those ribbons, thophys, plaques & metals to be in a box under your bed or out in your shop just siting there never to look at or enjoy again.  So, I decided that I was going to change that some of my must accomplished moments are when I was young.  I am sure, to some that might seen lame but I am pround of what I accomplished  when I was younger and I am want to enjoy what I did!  So with a little thought with one of my favorite silversmiths, and I have a few, Nick Cunningham and I decided to make a HUGE rocking ring with my American FFA Degree. I absolutely LOVE it. It is so rewarding when people ask what it is. When I tell them they think it is awesome and so do I. I was a kid that worked very hard for every award I received and still can think back to that moment in my life when I received them.
I am so excited for my next project.  I am going to take all my 4-H pins and mix it with some really cool vintage buttons and make a really cool brooch. I might add some crystals and other fun elements, but either way it is going to sparkle!  I think it is so great to enjoy the things you love and not just put them in a box never to enjoy again. I know you can’t just live for what you where in high school but the great things you did then, helped put you where you are today.  So take a little time and find a special place to put your special award that you love or make something out of that metal you won. I am not talking about a wall of all the things you did 20 years ago, just find a few special awards that mean a lot to you and find away to still enjoy and celebrate them.  So check under your bed or in your attic and get started today!

LOVE this idea. I didn’t have FFA at my school but i was a 10 year 4h member and my kids are working towards that. I’ve “been in” 4h since 1985 and don’t see an end any time soon:)

Please please post something about the 4-H pins when you are finished. I was too young for 4-H pins, so I’ve taken to collecting them when I see them at antique shops and such. I’d love to see more ideas on what to do with them!

Funny that I see this post on the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame’s facebook page today. I just wore my FFA jacket Saturday night to a fundraising event for my local and hometown FFA chapter. Glad to know I’m not the only one rockin’ it these days, almost 20 year later! Love the pin turned ring idea!
