Josh Weathers & The True Endeavors

I (Kim – the Editor) am a HUGE music junkie, HUGE.  I listen to a little bit of everything, but mostly independent country or as most people call it Texas/Red Dirt Country.  Don’t get me wrong Rhianna and Maroon 5 are on my iPod as well, but for the most part I stick to my roots.  I also work with a lot of bands with my photography, so I see a substantial amount of live music.  Every year for the past 24 years Larry Joe Taylor has held his Texas Music Festival around Stephenville, Texas, for a while it was in Meridian, but then got too big and was moved to just north of Stephenville.  It is pretty much all Texas/Red Dirt Country, however this year the band that stole the show is no where near country.  There really isn’t even a genre mold that they would fit in.  My friends and I just call it the ‘Josh Weathers Genre”.  He’s that good, they are that good.  Amy Moorhouse is an even bigger fan of his than I am!  She LOVES his music and no matter how long a day she has had, will stick it out until the end if he is playing.  That is true dedication and he has earned it.

I was really excited when I saw that Josh and his Endeavors were booked for Friday on the acoustic stage.  You see I don’t do the whole week of Larry Joe Taylor.  I can’t hang, I go for Friday and sometimes Saturday and go for some of my clients to get some live performance pictures for their promo uses.  So needless to say I was thrilled, he was set to play right after The Damn Quails.  Now I am sure a lot of people saw this and thought poor Josh, playing after the one of the most talked about new Red Dirt Bands.  I didn’t.  I knew.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the Quails, they are clients and very good friends of mine, but I know what kind of show Josh Weathers puts on and there is just no competition out there that can beat him.  NO ONE!  He is one of the most talented singers/musicians/entertainers in the world.  I am not exaggerating, he is that good.  The only thing that I hate about that, is that we (Texas, Fort Worth in particular) are bound to lose him to a national audience and soon.  All those people who thought poor Josh, are now thinking poor Quails.  (The Quails put on an amazing performance, they always do)

He is rockabilly soul made over into his own world of music.  His album is on repeat on my iPod often, it is always a pick me up.  His stage presence is phenomenal and filled with so much energy it’s tangible. Watching the crowd at LJT was almost as much fun as watching him.  The acoustic stage is always a little more of a subdued – lawn chair sitting – enjoying the music type of crowd.  So tell me why he got THREE standing ovations?  Like I said he is that good.  People were rocking in the seats, tapping their feet, waving their arms in the air, just having a good time.  That is until he played all alone on stage by himself.  This is a performance I hope I never get used to.  Josh Weathers has been covering ‘I Will Always Love You’, originally by Dolly Parton and later sang by the late Whitney Houston, for a while now.  I would hazard a guess and say it’s his most requested song.  I know you think nobody does this song like Whitney, I hear you, but you are wrong.  No disrespect to her at all, she did an amazing job with this song, but Josh does it better.  Maybe its because he is a guy and it is so unexpected or maybe its just because he does it better.  I don’t know, but I have the video to prove it!  Brad Beheler from GalleyWinter.com took this video at LJT (you can read his re-cap of the festival here), now the camera moves around a lot, but you don’t need to see, you just need to hear.

What did I tell you?  AMAZING!  You can’t see it in this video, but as well as the standing ovation, you could look around and watch people lifting up their arms and looking at their goose bumps.  SO SO COOL!

Check Josh Weathers & The True Endeavors out here and make sure and buy their album, you can thank me later!!

Remembering the Good Times

My parents had Elvis ~ I had Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.  Two people with such rare talents and voices that could move you to tears and messages in their songs that could give you the strength to just be you ~ to wear the one white glove & to be the rare different bird you were born to be.

I don’t know if it is the same for everyone ~ but music speaks to me, it moves me.  It is something I think when it is done with talent and heart is a message and a gift from God.  Don’t be mistaken, I can get a message from Rock’n’Roll just like I can from Gospel!  You just have to listen with your heart and hear the words.  Not only are there messages in the music there is also a calm and peacefulness that comes from the notes.

Whitney Houston, even with all her personal struggles, had a gift from God.  As I am sitting here listening to the news coverage and the comments on her troubled past I want to remember the positive ~ I want to remember her gift.

I want to remember the hot kiss with Kevin Costner in Bodyguard and her stirring rendition of a country song ~ “I Will Always Love You.”  I want to remember someone who sang the Star Spangled Banner with such ease and beauty that caused one to cry and get goose bumps.  I want to remember driving around my small cowboy town and singing “How Will I Know” at the top of my lungs with my best friend.  I want to remember dancing in my bedroom to “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”  I want to remember the lines in the song that gave me courage to just be me ~

I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadows

If I fail, if I succeed

At least I’ll live as I believe

No matter what they take from me

They can’t take away my dignity

I want to – no I am choosing to remember the positive.  Remember to help and not judge.  Remember everyone is fighting a battle ~ be the one that helps, not the one that holds someone down.

Remember that no drug is a better high than just being you and living the life you were intended to live

Remember the good in people ~ Remember to remind the people of the good in themselves

In closing, I leave you with one of my favorite Elvis Presley versions of a famous old quote   “Don’t criticize what you don’t understand, son. You never walked in that man’s shoes.”

Auf Wiedersehen to Heidi and Seal’s marriage…

Like Heidi always says, you are either in or you are out…and it looks like Seal is out. Heidi Klum from Project Runway and her one name husband Seal surprised their friends, family and fans when they released this press announcement Sunday:

“While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul-searching we have decided to separate. “We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart. This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority, especially during this time of transition. “We thank our family, friends, and fans for their kind words of support. And for our children’s sake, we appreciate you respecting our privacy.”

Seal apparently fueled rumors that they couple was splitting the sheets when on Friday he tweeted:

“The End”

Ouch.

So what is next for this no-longer power couple?  Well, they are going to continue to co-parent their four youngeons as Heidi remains the host of Project Runway and Seal heads Down Under to be a judge on the Australian version of “The Voice”.

Cashing in on her 15 minutes of fame…

In reality show news, Kyle Richards from the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills released her first book entitled “Life Is Not a Reality Show: Keeping It Real With the Housewife Who Does It All” last week. In the book she gives tips on everything from how to deal with a cheating spouse to how to get shiny, super long, age inappropriate hair just like hers. If you don’t want to buy the book, but still want to know the answer…Kyle swears she uses Pantene shampoo on her hair. Oops, I leaked the secret.

Look, reality television is my guilty pleasure and I love to watch all of the Real Housewives shows on Bravo because it is mind numbing entertainment, plain and simple…but I am not sure I need to take advice on how to “keep it real” from someone living in Beverly Hills, who also just happens to be Paris Hilton’s aunt.

I am going to pass on this one .

Have your own “most dramatic rose ceremony EVER”…

If you have ever wanted to know how it would feel to spend the night in the Bachelor/Bachelorette house? Well, depending on the filming schedule, now you can!  The Spanish-style estate in Agoura, California where the ABC television show is filmed rents for $2,100 a night, $13,225 a week or $35,225 for the entire month.

The six bedroom, nine bathroom 8,000 square foot house even comes with its own she-she name, “Villa de la Vina”…which I am going to assume  loosely translates into “House of the Desperate Fame Seeking Bimbo”.

I wouldn’t mind spending some time lounging around the mansion, but there would be no way I would even put a toe into that hot tub…some cooties you can’t kill no matter how much chlorine you use.

“Four The Record”

Okay, so obviously we love Miranda Lambert and most people would automatically assume that we would just say “this is a great record, go buy it” because it is Miranda Lambert.  I was actually a little nervous when I downloaded the album because of that.  What if I didn’t like it?  What would I write?  Would I lie and say I loved it because I love Miranda Lambert and what she stands for?  Luckily for me I LOVED IT!  Truly I do, no fake accolades here.  This is what I thought and took away from “Four The Record”

To say that “Four The Record” is a departure from the Miranda Lambert we have grown to know and love as an artist is the truth but it also untrue.  This album is so different than “Revolution”.  It shows a whole new side of Miranda Lambert.  It shows growth and admiration.  It also keeps to the Miranda we all love by being truly her.  There is an honestly that comes with everything she does that is consistent with all of her albums.  I am a self-proclaimed music junkie and music snob.  For me to like anything ‘mainstream’ is a challenge.  I think Nashville is sometimes like a factory just putting out the same generic crap with a different face slapped on the cover.  That being said, Miranda takes what is great about Nashville and mixes it with a gritty raw edge that can only be her.  Since I am obviously not a pro at writing an album review, I am going to take this track by track.

Track 1 – All Kinds of Kinds

I immediately fell in love with this track, the instrumentation in the intro is just beautiful.  Miranda’s voice is much the same as before, her twang is still intact, but there is a new softness that peaks out a little on this track before it blows your mind in later tracks.  Oklahoma native and Texas/Red Dirt star Stoney LaRue lends his vocals in the background of this track (with a sound that can only be Stoney) along with Don Henry.  It is small but if you know Stoney you hear it and love it.  I love the message of this song, it does take all kinds of kinds.  Somebody for everybody.  It is a humorous take, while still maintaining the integrity of the message.  Understanding and acceptance.

Track 2 – Fine Tune

I found this song odd at first, the microphone effect will throw you off a bit.  This song took me a couple of listens before I started to like it. Depending on my mood it could easily be one of my favorite tracks, just as easily as it could be my least favorite.  This song has been hanging around for a while, written five years ago by the same writers (minus Miranda Lambert) as the first single “Baggage Claim”.  Miranda has said that this is her “grown up” song, a song that lets her sexy side show now that she is a wife.  Like I said it takes a couple of listens, especially to really understand the lyrics, but once you get it, you love it.

Track 3 – Fastest Girl In Town

Written with one of her Pistol Annie cohorts, this song is why you fell in love with Miranda.  It is one of the closest sounding songs to a typical Miranda Lambert song on the album.  This is a great rocking track that every girl will rock out to in the car and know all the words to.  It will be a chart topper.  I did get a kick out of Miranda’s description of this song saying (and yes I am paraphrasing) that it makes being the fastest girl in town glamourous and not skanky.

Track 4 – Safe

WOW!  This song blew me away upon first listen.  It is a great love song, but not a mushy ‘oh you’re the love of my life’ love song.  A true love song about the things that really matter in love.  I was again blown away when I found out that Miranda wrote the song in a thirty minute time span on Blake’s tour bus during one of his shows.  She says that this is a song she is really proud of and she should be, it is fantastic.

Track 5 – Mama’s Broken Heart

This is a Kacey Musgraves song, she had planned to release it as her first single until Miranda talked her out of it.  Kacey should have no regrets about letting this one go, she will be rewarded thoroughly in royalties when it is released as a single.  I LOVE THIS SONG!  Everything about this song is so true.  Who hasn’t gone through a bad breakup and had their mother tell them to pull it together, put some make-up on and act like a lady?  I know I have.  It is everything a Miranda Lambert song should be, truthful, sassy with a raw edge that is music to your ears.

Track 6 – Dear Diamond

It made me cry.  By far my favorite of the entire album.  It is powerful in the softest way and will be one of my favorite songs for the rest of my life.  Patty Loveless sings on this track and it is very nice to hear her voice again.

Track 7 – Same Old You

A classic country ‘men aren’t worth a damn’ song, but Miranda’s delivery is what makes it a classic and not just a run of the mill country song.  Don’t get me wrong the songwriting is great, but there are not many people that could pull this song off the way she does.  Give this song to any other country singer and it wouldn’t be near as good.

Track 8 – Baggage Claim

When Baggage Claim hit the radio I was shocked at the different sound it had.  It wasn’t what I was used to hearing from Miranda, it actually look me a while to like it and I wondered to myself why they would release this song as the first single.  I see now they were just trying to ease us in to the new album.  Now after hearing the whole album it doesn’t sound so out of the box.  Baggage Claim was a great track to prepare you for this album.  A little of the old and a little of the new.

Track 9 – Easy Living

The songwriting combo of Miranda Lambert and Scotty Wray (Miranda’s guitar player) hasn’t been heard since “Kerosene”.  The main question should be why?  It is a great track and Scotty’s vocals give the song a great texture.  It’s a great sunny day driving song.

Track 10 –  Over You

A husband and wife co-write about loss that will take your breath.  Blake was right to give this song to Miranda, she gives the song the pain it needs without taking away from the listeners ability to get what they need out of the song.  This song will touch a lot of lives, and rightfully so.  If you listen to the song at all you will find yourself in tears in a hurry.

Track 11 – Miss Ohio

I watched a YouTube clip of an in studio interview of her shortly before the record came out.  In the background the song “Miss Ohio” was playing.  This little snippet made me excited and fearful for this album to come out.  I first heard “Miss Ohio” on the Band of Heathens’ album “One Foot in The Ether”.  If you have heard it before it was probably the song-writer Gillian Welch’s version or BOH’s version.  Both previous versions are so so good.  I hoped that I would fall in love with Miranda’s version as well.  She definitely puts her own spin on it, a sadder spin.  That being said, her version is phenomenal.  I can only imagine the challenge of recording a Gillian Welch song and making it not only your own, but making it so damn good.  Great job!

Track 12 – Better In The Long Run

The duet everyone has been waiting for.  This is not a Tim McGraw/Faith Hill duet.  It isn’t dripping with sap, thank goodness.  It is like everything Miranda does, truthful and filled with reality.  I think that is why I like it so much, it isn’t a “look at how much we love each other aren’t you jealous” love song.  It is about the realities of marriage, of loving and living with someone for a long time and how it isn’t perfect but you stay because of the love.

Track 13 – Nobody’s Fool

I have to say I was really hoping this was Wade Bowen’s Nobody’s Fool when I saw it on the track listing, so I was a little disappointed when it started.  Don’t worry I wasn’t disappointed long.  Great song about the aftermath of a break-up.

Track 14 – Oklahoma Sky

Allison Moorer wrote and sings on this song.  This was originally supposed to be a co-write between Moorer and Lambert.  However Moorer was inspired to finish it on her own, sending an acoustic demo to Miranda later.  I hate that Texas has somewhat lost Miranda Lambert to Oklahoma, but good for her for wanting to represent her new home on the album, and what better way to do it than with an Allison Moorer song.  Once again like the Gillian Welch penned “Miss Ohio”, Miranda took on a challenge that not many singers would have the guts to take and delivered a flawless version of the song.  The harmonies on this track are nothing but beautiful.

WOW, that was a long review, probably too long.  I would suggest if you are an iTunes user downloading the deluxe version, it has a lot of great extras and insights that Miranda’s fans are going to love and even if you are not a die hard fan you will appreciate and enjoy.  It also has a bonus track, that I didn’t review frankly because I have rambled enough.  Point of the review, I give it two thumbs up, five stars & ten gypsies; GO BUY IT TODAY!
